Numeracy is defined as the “ability to understand and work with numbers.”1 The goal of the numeracy program is for learners to get an effective foundation in numeracy and mathematics in the early primary school years. The program is called Calculating with Confidence, and it presents a series instructions for teachers and tutors, which show how to use numeracy models and methods with learners across Grades 1, 2 and 3. These learners need foundational numeracy to succeed in other subjects like science, language, and arts and to enjoy learning. 

This intervention originated in South Africa, where two languages of instruction were used in the classroom. Compassion has contextualized the intervention to use one language for instruction. A second language may later be introduced depending on the needs of National Offices and FCPs. The teaching and learning resources are well organized and can support using more than one language.
